Committees

Finance Committee
The purpose of the BWUA finance committee is to supplement the professional skills and industry access the group provides with general industry knowledge and discussion. Through various events and the weekly market update that all members receive, the committee works towards its goal to keep the membership abreast of current issues as well as prepared for future trends. Providing resources to cultivate a well informed group is an integral part of the value BWUA seeks to add to its members.

HEMM Committee
This committee is led by the HEMM Chairperson and the VP of Corporate Development.  From implementation to fruition, committee members are responsible for all organizational aspects involved with delivering this premier career event.  Specific duties range from logistical planning to theme, panelist and keynote selection, corporate sponsor solicitation and marketing.  Anyone who has an interest in any facet of event coordination, a knack for creativity or just an interest in getting involved is encouraged to come out to a meeting and join the team!

Academic Committee
The role of Academic Chair is to aid the BWUA constituency academically through organizing and planning events, thereby fulfilling an important part of BWUA’s mission. He or she is responsible for hosting weekly study hours and providing tutors for the general body during midterms and finals. This year the Academic Chair will also host a book sale at the end of the year, in which general body members can sell their old textbooks to the rest of the general body via the BWUA website.

Alumni Relations Committee
The overarching goal of this committee is to improve the connection between BWUA and its most valuable resource: its alumni. The principal event that this committee will implement is the Alumni Dinner, which will take place during the Penn Relays. However, we will also find unique and creative ways to encourage alumni involvement with the organization. Anyone who is interested in planning events, thinking of new ideas, or contacting alumni should definitely sign up!

Community Service Committee
The Community Service Committee of BWUA serves as the organization’s link to the Philadelphia community. Our members encourage others to honor their duty of civic responsibility. We host various community service initiatives throughout the year in order to foster a greater bond between BWUA, UPenn and the West Philadelphia community. Furthermore, we recognize that social responsibility plays a key role in achieving the success and prestigious title of a strong, influential organization. As we prepare for our personal careers in the business world and beyond, we would like to call attention to this often overlooked commitment.

Freshman Liaison Committee
The Freshman Liaison Committee is focused on meeting all of the needs of the freshmen of the Black Wharton Undergraduate Association. This committee looks to ensure that freshmen receive the most value out of BWUA through its events, activities, and GBMs.  The Freshman Liaison Committee must keep freshman members up to date with the various opportunities within the Black Wharton Undergraduate Association, and make sure that these opportunities meet their needs.  The responsibilities of this committee include recruitment and retention, mentorship programs, freshmen-specific events, and freshmen outreach.

Marketing Committee
The purpose of the marketing committee is to publicize BWUA events and increase attendance to bi-weekly general body meetings.  This committee doesn't require many members, but rather creative people who are willing to think outside the box in ways to publicize BWUA events.  If you have great communication skills and an interest in marketing, you should join this committee.  Also any Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator skills are a plus.

Membership Committee
As the name suggests the Membership Committee’s main priority is the members of BWUA.  This committee looks to ensure that each member of this organization receives the most value out of every BWUA event, program, and general body meeting.  The responsibilities of this committee include recruitment and retention, mentorship programs, class events, and freshmen outreach.  The Membership Committee acts as the members’ main resource for information concerning this organization and its ongoing activities, and makes sure all members are well informed and benefiting from the agenda headed by this organization.

Professional Development Committee
The Professional Development Committee is aimed at preparing BWUA members for success in any professional setting. To that end, we are striving to perfect skills crucial to getting an internship or job, so that we might be as competitive as possible in any application processes. The Professional Development committee has many tools to achieve this, but will principally be leveraging our relationships with alumni and the Penn community in order to host resume, interview, and networking workshops. We will also be hosting several panels throughout the semester, the most noteworthy of which will be focused at excelling once actually in the workplace—we cannot afford to be overlooked or to waste any opportunities that come our way.

Social Committee
The social committee is responsible for organizing and helping the Social Chair plan the social activities and events of BWUA. The social committee is encouraged to plan at least two social events a year and will assist the Social Chair in the design and implementation of those events. The Social Committee is also responsible for creating games and activities for general body meetings when needed.

Web Site Development Committee
This committee is responsible for the design, development and management of the blackwharton.com web site and BWUA’s online presence.  We work with the rest of the board, members, alumni, sponsors, and other organizations to deliver the most value through frequent additions to the web site and provide innovative solutions to the technological needs of the organization.  This committee is comprised of creative students with experience in designing, coding or writing and an interest in the latest web and information technologies.
